In times of severe distress, King David places his absolute and exclusive trust in God. Facing a direct threat to his life, he declares complete dependence on Him, entirely rejecting any hope or reliance on human help [רד״ק, מאירי]. This profound trust is not a distant hope, but a direct and active clinging to God as his sole source of security [אבן עזרא].

The danger David faces stems from the period when he was forced to flee from King Saul. His plea for protection is specifically directed against the men who joined Saul and actively assisted in the hunt [רד״ק, מאירי]. Interestingly, David's primary fear is not necessarily Saul himself. Saul was a righteous man who would sometimes speak words of comfort to David, much like a father speaking to his son. Instead, the real danger comes from the inciting mob surrounding the king, such as Doeg the Edomite and the Ziphites. These agitators constantly rose up against David with evil intent, pushing and manipulating the king into continuing the chase [אלשיך].

Confronting this complex threat, David makes a twofold plea for help, reflecting an escalation in the danger he experiences. The first level of his request is a call for salvation from an enemy who is actively pursuing him. The second level, however, is an urgent cry for rescue. This implies a far more desperate situation, describing a person who has already been caught in a trap or has fallen directly into enemy hands, desperately needing to be pulled out before being torn apart [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective views this double plea as a response to the two distinct sources of danger involved in the pursuit. First, David asks to be saved from the inciters and the mob actively chasing him. Second, he asks to be delivered from King Saul himself. Even though Saul occasionally showed moments of kindness and made good promises, David recognizes that those assurances cannot be fully trusted when his life is on the line [אלשיך].
