פרשת עקב

Deuteronomy 11:21Sefaria

לְמַ֨עַן יִרְבּ֤וּ יְמֵיכֶם֙ וִימֵ֣י בְנֵיכֶ֔ם עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֧ע יְהֹוָ֛ה לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶ֖ם לָתֵ֣ת לָהֶ֑ם כִּימֵ֥י הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ*(בספרי תימן הָאָֽרֶץ בצד״י גדולה)׃ {ס}

The promise of a long, secure life in the Land of Israel stands as the ultimate reward for observing God's instructions, particularly the study of Torah and the placement of a Mezuzah. This creates a direct link between physical actions, spiritual standing, and the eternal bond between the Israelites and their land. However, this is a conditional guarantee: faithfulness to the commandments leads to a prolonged existence on the land, while abandonment of these duties results in exile [רש״י, ביאור ישר, בכור שור]. Because this promise of longevity immediately follows the instruction to affix a Mezuzah, it becomes clear that a long life is the specific reward for this act [אור החיים]. Consequently, women are equally obligated to fulfill the commandment of Mezuzah, as they too require the blessing of a long life [תורה תמימה, חזקוני]. The protective power of this act extends to children as well [תורה תמימה], and a city marked by Mezuzahs is even spared from the severe judgments placed upon an idolatrous city [אדרת אליהו].

The promise of longevity focuses specifically on the multiplication of one's daily experiences rather than merely adding years to a lifespan. This highlights a blessing of quality, ensuring that every single day is meaningful and filled with good [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, engaging deeply with Torah and commandments allows a person to maximize their daily experiences, even if their overall lifespan is destined to be short [אלשיך]. Since this longevity is explicitly tied to living on the Land of Israel, a question arises regarding individuals who enjoy long lives while living in exile. This is resolved through dedication to synagogues and study halls. By arriving early and leaving late, individuals transform these spaces into extensions of the holy land, allowing the promise of long life to be fulfilled even in the diaspora [כלי יקר, נחלת יעקב, תורה תמימה].

A deeper layer of faith is revealed in how the promise of the land is framed. The assurance of inheritance is not directed solely at the current generation, but rather speaks of giving the land to the forefathers of the nation. Since the patriarchs did not actually inherit the land during their own lifetimes, the primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a fundamental source for the belief in the resurrection of the dead. It guarantees that the forefathers will eventually rise to inherit the land promised to them [רש״י, מזרחי, תורה תמימה, שפתי חכמים].

The imagery of the heavens resting over the earth offers a profound conclusion to this promise, carrying multiple layers of meaning. The primary approach among commentators views this as a symbol of eternity. Just as the heavens and the earth are permanent fixtures of creation, the Israelites' settlement on their land is guaranteed forever [רבנו בחיי, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה, שפתי כהן], sustained by the eternal nature of the Torah itself [רלב״ג]. On a spiritual level, it ensures that life on the land will be elevated and authentic, reflecting the purity of the World to Come [הכתב והקבלה]. This relationship also highlights a deep dependency; just as the earth relies on the heavens to flourish, the prosperity of the land depends entirely on the moral and spiritual conduct of the people [רש״ר הירש]. In a natural sense, this imagery paints a picture of perfect physical harmony, where the heavens provide rain and the earth yields its harvest [רשב״ם]. Finally, it serves as an assurance that God's providence will continuously expand the borders of the land to accommodate a growing nation, mirroring how the heavenly systems naturally govern and expand life across the world [העמק דבר].
