פרשת עקב

Deuteronomy 11:7Sefaria

Moses delivers a direct and personal message to the generation standing before him, drawing a sharp distinction between their own historical experiences and those of future generations. Rather than standing as an isolated thought, this address completes a point established earlier. Moses makes it clear that his strong words are not aimed at the younger generation who did not personally live through the trials of the Exodus. Instead, he speaks directly to the adults who were present, emphasizing that they are the primary audience because they actually lived through these events [רש״י, רשב״ם, מזרחי, שפתי חכמים, גור אריה, ביאור יש״ר]. Their understanding is not based on stories passed down, but on direct, personal observation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

What they witnessed was the full force of God's power directed at those who rebelled against Him. This included the plagues in Egypt and the splitting of the Red Sea, as well as the strict punishment of internal rebels within their own ranks, such as Dathan and Abiram [ספורנו]. Looking at the broader picture, these were not simply isolated historical incidents. They were carefully connected steps in one massive divine plan to establish the Israelites as God's nation, bound by the Torah [רש״ר הירש].

Seeing these events firsthand places a double responsibility on this generation. On a personal level, their intimate knowledge of God's might means they must completely avoid any future rebellion [בכור שור]. Furthermore, this direct experience elevates them to a higher spiritual level, requiring them to accept the laws of the Torah out of a genuine love for God [העמק דבר]. On an educational level, they are tasked with the crucial duty to warn their children and pass this message on to the next generation, who did not have the opportunity to see these miracles themselves [ספורנו].
