The promise of a long and secure life in the Land of Israel is deeply tied to the observance of God's Commandments. Inheriting the land is not merely a historical event that happened once in the past, but an ongoing reality that depends entirely on the actions of the people throughout history. The assurance of a long life serves as a special reward for bringing a Commandment to completion once it has been started. This guarantee ensures that individuals and their descendants will enjoy an extended life, living to see their world thrive and prosper [העמק דבר].

At the same time, this promise carries an underlying warning. The ability to remain in the land relies entirely on the children continuing to observe the Commandments. If future generations abandon the path of the Torah, they will face swift punishment and be exiled. This removal will happen so fast that they will not even have the chance to fully settle, establish themselves, or put down deep roots [ספורנו].

The divine oath to grant this land reveals a fundamental truth about how it is inherited. While one might naturally focus first on the rich, flowing qualities of the land itself before considering the promise to provide it, the primary focus remains on the ongoing nature of the gift. In standard human affairs, a piece of land given to ancestors automatically passes down to their children as natural property. However, this inheritance does not transfer automatically. Instead, God constantly and newly gives this land, with all its unique blessings, directly to each subsequent generation [העמק דבר].
