Genesis 15:4Sefaria

In moments of deep doubt, when the fear of having no legacy overwhelms the heart, divine reassurance can arrive with sudden and absolute clarity. While Abraham is still expressing his despair about his servant taking over his household, God responds immediately This swift reply brings immense relief, as Abraham had worried that his questioning was inappropriate and might cause God to stop speaking to him [העמק דבר]. In truth, God had intentionally concealed the exact nature of His promised reward to test Abraham, waiting to see if he would request wealth or power. Once Abraham revealed that a child was his only true desire, the divine answer came instantly

God directly dispels Abraham's anxiety, firmly rejecting the idea that his servant will take over his legacy God assures him that a biological son will be born, grow to adulthood, and successfully manage the household even during Abraham's lifetime, entirely eliminating any concern about an outsider inheriting the estate [ספורנו, מלבי״ם]. God addresses this material inheritance primarily because Abraham had just mentioned it, not because physical wealth is a heavenly priority [אלשיך]. By confirming a biological child, God clarifies His earlier promises and removes Abraham's mistaken belief that his astrological destiny doomed him to remain childless

The promise specifies that the child will come from Abraham's own internal organs, referring to the digestive system [רלב״ג, מחוקקי יהודה], which is used as a polite biological reference for reproduction due to their physical proximity [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מחוקקי יהודה]. Beyond the physical reality, this carries a profound emotional truth. These internal organs are traditionally viewed as the seat of human emotion, particularly mercy and compassion. While intellect and knowledge can be taught to anyone, moral sensitivity, gentleness, and the capacity to empathize with the suffering of others are foundational traits passed down through a deep, internal inheritance. God promises that this child will inherit not merely physical wealth, but Abraham's pure, compassionate character, forming the moral foundation upon which an entire nation will be built [רש״ר הירש].
