וַאֲנִ֖י בַּיהֹוָ֣ה אֶעְל֑וֹזָה אָגִ֖ילָה בֵּאלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׁעִֽי׃

Amidst a prophetic vision of global destruction and total chaos, a profound declaration of absolute trust and joy emerges. Despite a harsh and terrifying reality, there is no room for worry; all comfort, hope, and happiness are found entirely in God's guiding hand [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

The identity of the speaker in this moment of triumph can be understood in two ways. It may be the personal voice of the prophet himself, sitting alone, finding deep happiness in the simple fact that God's will is being carried out across heaven and earth [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the prophet serves as the voice for the entire nation of Israel. In this light, the words capture the future joy the Israelites will experience when they are finally rescued from their enemies, such as during the ultimate defeat of the camp of Gog. It is a vision of salvation and redemption, recognizing that even though the nation is small in number, God remains their true strength, power, and shield [רש״י, רד״ק, אברבנאל, צאינה וראינה].

The expressions of gladness offer different layers of meaning. Some commentators view the dual descriptions of joy as a poetic repetition, simply reinforcing the same feeling of happiness through different words [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. However, others see a deep distinction between the types of joy described [מלבי״ם]. The first represents an external, visible happiness, the kind that spills over into physical actions like dancing. This outward joy is directed toward God's general rule over the universe, anticipating the day when the entire world will recognize His power and kingdom. The second type of joy is internal, a quiet happiness within the heart sparked by the occurrence of something entirely new. This inner joy is connected to God specifically as a personal savior [מצודת דוד]. It flows from His direct, special care for the Israelites and the new miracles He will perform for them throughout time [מלבי״ם].
