II Kings 20:18Sefaria

A harsh prophecy of doom foretells the eventual exile and subjugation of the royal lineage to the Babylonian empire. The primary approach among commentators is that this prediction points directly to King Hezekiah's royal descendants, specifically identifying them as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

The prophetic message places a strong emphasis on these future generations. Some explain the repetitive language used to describe these offspring as a standard feature of biblical style [מצודת דוד]. However, others see a specific historical hint. At the time he received this prophecy, Hezekiah actually had no children; his son Manasseh would not be born for another three years. Therefore, the warning applies to his distant future lineage, as later descendants are often referred to as direct children, much like the entire nation is called the Israelites [רלב״ג].

These descendants are destined to serve in the palace of the Babylonian king, though the exact nature of their role is debated. Many commentators explain that they would serve as ministers and high-ranking officials [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק]. Yet, ancient traditions offer two distinct interpretations of their condition. One view understands their title literally, suggesting they would be physically altered as eunuchs to serve in the royal court. Another perspective interprets the concept metaphorically, playing on the same word: rather than a physical change, it represents the "castration" or complete nullification of idol worship. Through their unwavering faith while in Babylon, these descendants would expose the emptiness of idolatry, proving to everyone that it held no real power [רד״ק].
