שמואל ב, פרק ה׳, פסוק ד׳

II Samuel 5:4Sefaria

בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֛ה דָּוִ֖ד בְּמׇלְכ֑וֹ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה מָלָֽךְ׃

The era of David’s leadership marks a profound turning point of stability for the nation. Unlike the previous, short-lived rule of Saul, whose exact years are not detailed in the historical record, David’s kingdom is viewed as a permanent and enduring institution. Because of this lasting significance, the exact span of his life and his time in power are carefully recorded [אברבנאל]. He officially took the throne at the age of thirty [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Reaching this specific age is highly significant, as thirty is widely considered the peak of human readiness, representing the ideal balance of physical strength, courage, and mature understanding [אברבנאל].

From that starting point, he remained in power for forty years until the end of his life [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A simple calculation reveals that he passed away at the age of seventy. By reaching this milestone, he achieved the ideal human lifespan, perfectly reflecting the poetic description in Psalms that the natural days of our lives are seventy years [אברבנאל].

However, the official record of a forty-year reign presents a slight historical difficulty, as he actually ruled for forty years and six months. The primary approach among commentators is that the official count simply tallies complete years. It rounds down, following a general principle that a larger, rounded number naturally absorbs a smaller fraction [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

Beyond the simple mathematics, there are deeper historical and spiritual reasons for omitting these six months from the official record of his leadership. Some explain that this half-year corresponds directly to the dark period when he was forced to flee from his rebellious son, Absalom. During that time, he did not function as a monarch but lived as a commoner seeking atonement for his past mistakes, making it inappropriate to count those days as part of his royal reign [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Other perspectives connect the missing time to different events in his life. One view suggests the six months were deducted because his army commander, Joab, was away fighting in Edom. Another explanation is that for half a year, he suffered from a severe skin illness, during which the Divine Presence departed from him and the members of the high court distanced themselves. Consequently, these months of deep personal sorrow were intentionally left out of the official total of his royal years [אברבנאל].
