שמואל ב, פרק ו׳, פסוק א׳

II Samuel 6:1Sefaria

וַיֹּ֨סֶף ע֥וֹד דָּוִ֛ד אֶת־כׇּל־בָּח֥וּר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אָֽלֶף׃

After firmly establishing his rule, King David launches a massive national and spiritual initiative. He calls together a vast crowd to bring the Ark of the Covenant from the house of Avinadav to its new resting place. The king actively gathers the nation for this monumental event [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ], continually bringing in more and more people to join the procession [רד״ק].

This massive assembly is not the king's first. The primary approach among commentators is that it mirrors an earlier great gathering, when the masses of Israel came together to crown David in Hebron. Now, a second assembly of equal magnitude takes place [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק, צאינה וראינה]. Alternatively, this new gathering is tied to more recent events, representing an additional call for people beyond the army that had just been drafted for the ongoing war against the Philistines [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

The crowd consists of thirty thousand specific individuals, whose identity is understood in a few ways. One approach views them as an elite, chosen group. In this light, David invites the elders and judges of Israel to join the journey, with every city sending its finest representatives [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. According to [מלבי״ם], there is a tradition that tens of thousands of elders are officially ordained during this very event.

Another perspective understands this group simply as young, physically strong men [צאינה וראינה]. This raises a practical question: why would a religious procession to move the Ark require a force of strong, military-aged men? [אברבנאל] offers two reasons. First, there is a real security threat, as the Philistines might try to seize the opportunity to attack and capture the Ark. Second, the celebration of moving the Ark involves intense dancing, leaping, and energetic movement, making it an event perfectly suited for the physical stamina of the youth.
