כִּ֣י כֹה֩ אָמַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כַּ֤ד הַקֶּ֙מַח֙ לֹ֣א תִכְלָ֔ה וְצַפַּ֥חַת הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן לֹ֣א תֶחְסָ֑ר עַ֠ד י֧וֹם (תתן) [תֵּת־]יְהֹוָ֛ה גֶּ֖שֶׁם עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃

Regarding exactly how this continuous supply functioned, different perspectives emerge. One approach suggests that the very air inside the containers continuously transformed into fresh flour and oil [אברבנאל]. Another perspective highlights that the containers did not suddenly fill to the brim. Instead, the small amount the widow originally possessed remained exactly the same. Each time she removed a portion, the contents replenished to that exact previous level, ensuring the miracle was a tangible, daily experience rather than a single event [חומת אנך]. Ultimately, it was the divine blessing itself resting within the containers that actively generated this ongoing abundance [אלשיך].

This supernatural provision was given a strict time limit, set to end the day God brought rain back to the earth. Once natural weather patterns resumed and the earth could yield its crops, the miracle would no longer be necessary [מצודת דוד]. The arrival of this rain was deeply tied to the widow's own actions. A subtle textual hint indicates that God would only provide the rain after the widow first gave her small portion of food to the prophet. It is only through such human generosity and initiative in the physical world that heavenly mercy is awakened, allowing the rains of blessing to finally fall from above [מנחת שי].
