שמואל א, פרק כ״א, פסוק י״א

I Samuel 21:11Sefaria

After a period of wandering, a dramatic decision takes shape as David chooses to leave his homeland and seek refuge among his enemies, the Philistines. This moment marks a profound physical and mental recovery. Previously, David was hungry, weak, and entirely unequipped, leaving him unable to properly escape. However, after receiving food, taking up Goliath's sword, and seeking guidance from God, his spirit returned. He finally gathered the strength to stand up and run [חומת אנך, אברבנאל].

The specific timing of this escape raises a question, as David had already been on the run for several days. The primary approach among commentators explains that as long as David remained within the borders of the Land of Israel, he was still effectively under Saul's rule, meaning his escape was not yet complete. Only on this particular day, when he crossed the border entirely to get away from Saul, did his flight become absolute. On the other hand, the sudden urgency can be traced to David's realization that Doeg the Edomite was present and would surely inform on him, demanding an immediate departure [אלשיך].

Forced into this desperate situation, David chose the safest possible location away from Saul, despite the deep uncertainty of how his enemies would receive him [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He approached the Philistine king personally to request protection and offer his military services, a common practice for fugitives seeking asylum with a foreign ruler [אלשיך].

Although the Book of Psalms refers to this same ruler as Abimelech, there is no contradiction. Abimelech was the official royal title used for all Philistine kings, much like the title of Pharaoh in Egypt, while Achish was the king's actual personal name [רד״ק, אברבנאל].
