A dramatic, physical display sets the stage for a severe message of impending disaster. God commands the prophet to purchase an earthenware flask, specifically made of baked clay rather than wood, glass, or metal [רד״ק]. The simple act of purchasing this item carries profound meaning, hinting at how God originally acquired the people of Israel and their land as His own possession [אברבנאל]. The choice of baked clay presents a stark contrast to earlier messages. While wet clay in a potter's hand can easily be molded and fixed, a fired clay vessel cannot be repaired once it is shattered. This mirrors the tragic spiritual state of the nation. They have sunk so deeply into idol worship that their fate is sealed, leaving no opportunity for correction [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
The physical traits of the flask add further layers to the warning. The primary approach among commentators is that this type of vessel features a narrow opening, and its Hebrew name mimics the gurgling sound liquid makes as it pours out [מצודת ציון]. Because of its narrow mouth, such a flask was often used to store honey. If the honey hardened inside, it could not be scooped out; the only way to remove it was to smash the entire container. In the same way, the people have become so filled with terrible advice and heretical thoughts that verbal warnings are no longer enough. Their corruption can only be cleared away through a complete breaking [מלבי״ם]. Additionally, the name of the flask is closely related to words meaning emptiness and desolation. This points to a double emptiness: the people are entirely empty of proper understanding, and as a direct result, Jerusalem will soon be emptied of its inhabitants [אברבנאל].
To ensure the message hits its mark, God instructs the prophet to take the elders of the people and the elders of the priests along with him [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. He brings these leaders to hear the prophecy and watch the shattering of the flask with their own eyes as a dire warning [רד״ק]. These specific figures are chosen to shock them into realizing the reality of the approaching ruin. Soon, the Temple will be destroyed, leaving the priests with no service to perform, and Jerusalem will be left completely desolate, stripped of its elders and guides [אברבנאל].
