ירמיהו, פרק כ״ז, פסוק י״ט

Jeremiah 27:19Sefaria

The impending exile of Jerusalem cast a long shadow over the grand, central vessels remaining in the Temple. A stark prophecy is delivered concerning the historical destiny of these sacred objects, dividing them into distinct categories with entirely different futures [רד״ק]. Among the items destined for capture were the massive copper pillars that stood in the Temple [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], the great water reservoir known as the sea, which was crafted as a giant copper tub by King Solomon [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], and the heavy bases that supported the copper washbasins [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The prophetic message regarding these items is introduced with a divine declaration that repeats as the narrative continues. While this repetition might appear to be a simple stylistic choice [מלבי״ם בביאור המילות], it actually serves to create a deliberate prophetic division between two groups of vessels. The large copper items were destined to be taken to Babylon and never brought back. Conversely, the remaining silver and gold vessels were also sentenced to exile, but with a promise of eventual restoration to Jerusalem. This prophetic split played out exactly as foretold in history; during the reign of Cyrus, only the silver and gold items were brought back to the land, while the copper pillars, the reservoir, and the bases were left behind in Babylon [מלבי״ם].

This contrasting fate is deeply reflected in the specific titles used for God throughout the prophecy. When speaking of the copper vessels that would never return, He is referred to as the Lord of Hosts, a title highlighting His absolute authority and power to punish and exile as He sees fit. However, when the prophecy shifts to the silver and gold vessels destined to come back, the title "God of Israel" is added. This shift beautifully expresses His careful providence, love, and mercy toward His people as He brings them home from exile [מלבי״ם].
