ירמיהו, פרק כ״ח, פסוק י׳

Jeremiah 28:10Sefaria

To vividly illustrate the approaching subjugation to the king of Babylon as decreed by God, Jeremiah walked with a wooden yoke upon his neck [מצודת ציון]. In a public and defiant counter-move, Hananiah stepped forward, removed the yoke from Jeremiah, and broke it [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This was not merely a dramatic gesture, but an act rooted in a deep spiritual understanding of prophecy. When a prophet accompanies a vision with a tangible, physical action, the decreed outcome becomes absolute and cannot be undone, even if it is a prophecy of disaster. Knowing this, Hananiah deliberately performed a physical counter-action. By breaking the wood, he intended to actively nullify Jeremiah's prophetic act [מלבי״ם].

Earlier, Jeremiah had been commanded to prepare yokes for several different kings. At the moment of this confrontation, he may not have had the chance to send them to their respective destinations. Alternatively, he might have already sent the others to the foreign rulers, leaving only a single wooden yoke on his own neck to symbolize the king of Judah. This was the specific yoke that Hananiah seized [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

Although Hananiah physically shattered the wooden pole, the act represented something much larger than the object itself. The breaking was directed not just at the wood, but at the binding knots that held the harness together [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. On a deeper, symbolic level, the shattering of this physical object was Hananiah's way of claiming that he could break the actual, oppressive power of the king of Babylon over the people [אברבנאל].
