Jeremiah 35:6Sefaria

The Rechabites display absolute loyalty to their ancestral heritage, firmly refusing to drink wine even after centuries have passed. Their steadfastness goes far beyond merely honoring a family tradition; it reflects a profound spiritual and moral worldview centered on simplicity. When they speak of Jonadab as their father, they are not referring to their immediate biological parent, but rather to the ancient founder and head of their family [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Jonadab actually lived during the era of King Jehu, nearly three hundred years before these events take place in the days of Jehoiakim [רד״ק]. Reflecting on Jonadab's life, his historical association with Jehu provides a moral warning from the Sages: a person must avoid the company of the wicked, even if the intention is to bring that wicked individual closer to the path of the Torah [מנחת שי].

The instruction to abstain from wine was established as an eternal decree, binding upon the family for all generations [מצודת דוד]. This directive, along with additional prohibitions against building houses and planting fields, was designed to instill a permanent sense of humility and submission. Wine is specifically avoided because it can lead to many evils and sorrow.

On a broader scale, this minimalist lifestyle serves as a constant reminder that human beings are like passing shadows, living as strangers in a temporary world. While the rest of humanity toils to construct secure homes, plant vineyards, and gather wealth that will ultimately be left to others, the Rechabites find contentment in living in tents and drinking water. This deep modesty spares them from the exhausting pursuit of material wealth, freeing their minds and hearts for quiet reflection, full devotion to serving God, and the continuous study of the Torah [חומת אנך].
