איוב, פרק י״ד, פסוק ח׳

Job 14:8Sefaria

אִם־יַזְקִ֣ין בָּאָ֣רֶץ שׇׁרְשׁ֑וֹ וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר יָמ֥וּת גִּזְעֽוֹ׃

A once-thriving tree can reach a point of such extreme age and decay that it appears entirely lifeless. Its vitality fades, and its ability to draw nourishment from the soil ceases, leaving behind what looks like a hopeless, withered shell.

Looking closely at the physical structure of the tree and the layers of the ground reveals a clearer picture of this decline. The deepest part of the tree is the root, buried far below the surface, while the stump sits higher up in the shallow topsoil [מלבי״ם]. Some interpret the image of the dying stump as a poetic restatement of the aging root, emphasizing a tree that has completely dried out and lost all its moisture [מצודת דוד]. Others view the stump as simply another term for the root itself [מצודת ציון].

However, a careful look at the process of decay reveals a critical difference between these parts. The deep root merely ages and weakens; it loses its strength to pull nutrients, but it does not actually die. In contrast, the upper stump dries up completely and perishes, or at least appears dead to anyone looking at it [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This detail holds the key to the tree's future. If the deep root had truly died, the tree would be lost forever. Because the root remains alive while only the stump perishes, a spark of potential survives. The tree cannot sprout again on its own, but if it receives an external source of water, it can be awakened and brought back to life [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical world, this imagery serves as a metaphor for spiritual consequences and the connection between generations. In this view, the aging deep root represents a father who lives a long life, while the dead stump represents his child. The scene illustrates a tragic reality where a son dies because of his father's sins. As a result, the aging father is left alone, without an heir who might continue his legacy or correct his past wrongs [אלשיך].
