Proverbs 19:28Sefaria

A functioning justice system relies entirely on the pursuit of truth. Yet, when hostile individuals manipulate the power of language, they can easily twist the law and turn the courts into a weapon of destruction. A corrupt witness operates in one of two distinct ways to achieve this. On one hand, he might act as a smooth-talking advocate. By using eloquent and polished speech, he presents himself as a sincere seeker of truth. His ultimate goal is to win the judge's complete trust, appearing so reliable that the court stops investigating the matter deeply Alternatively, the witness might take a path of mockery. In this approach, he treats the justice system with contempt, making a joke of the legal process to secure a distorted verdict that can lead to severe suffering or even death

The destructive speech of these individuals acts to swallow up justice, a process that takes several forms. The primary approach among commentators is that this consuming action represents concealment. The wicked hide their true, malicious intentions or the crimes of others, speaking with such craftiness that anyone listening assumes they are completely innocent Others view this action as one of pure destruction and ruin There is also a perspective of self-inflicted harm, where the evil and corruption will ultimately swallow and destroy the wicked person himself [רש״י].

The exact identity of the wicked people involved in this corruption varies. They might be the false witnesses themselves who are actively covering up a crime [עמנואל הרומי]. They could also be bystanders who back up the false testimony to grant it an illusion of credibility [אלשיך]. Finally, they might even be corrupt judges who willingly cooperate with the lies to hide the injustice [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the courtroom, this dynamic applies to philosophy and logic. A corrupt witness is much like a false premise in an intellectual argument. Just as a lying witness warps a legal ruling, a flawed foundational assumption inevitably leads to a wrong conclusion. Those who promote false ideas use deceptive methods to force people to swallow and accept lies and impossible falsehoods as proven facts
