Proverbs 19:6Sefaria

רַ֭בִּים יְחַלּ֣וּ פְנֵֽי־נָדִ֑יב וְכׇל־הָ֝רֵ֗עַ לְאִ֣ישׁ מַתָּֽן׃

Human nature naturally gravitates toward centers of abundance and influence. Generosity creates a powerful magnetic pull, elevating a person's social standing and proving the clear advantage of wealth over poverty. The primary approach among commentators is that people from all walks of life, including great leaders and important dignitaries, are naturally drawn to seek out and connect with someone who is willing to share his fortune [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, the social bonds formed around a wealthy benefactor are rarely genuine. The crowds seeking his company are driven by self-interest rather than a desire to support the truly needy. Everyone puts on a display of friendship and closeness, hoping to receive a share of the wealth. Even if it is widely known that the benefactor will only select a single person to receive a gift, the entire crowd will act like his closest companions, each hoping to be the fortunate one chosen [אלשיך].

A deeper moral and psychological distinction exists between different types of givers. A truly generous individual acts with careful judgment, distributing his funds only to those who are genuinely in need, such as the poor during times of distress. Because he does not scatter his wealth among the rich, he lacks wealthy friends, though many destitute people seek his help. In contrast, an indiscriminate giver freely hands out presents to anyone who asks, regardless of their actual need. While a large crowd gathers around such a person and shows him great affection, this friendship is entirely fake and relies strictly on personal benefit [מלבי״ם].

Beyond material wealth, this dynamic also applies directly to the spiritual realm. From this perspective, the sharing of gifts refers not to money, but to the teaching of Torah [רש״י]. When God blesses a person with abundant wisdom and that individual volunteers to share his understanding and guide others, he becomes a powerful spiritual magnet. Just as crowds pursue a wealthy man for his financial resources, those seeking the word of God and true wisdom will eagerly gather around the wise teacher to learn from his ways [עמנואל הרומי].
