Proverbs 30:8Sefaria

A deep prayer for balance asks God for protection from dangerous extremes in both the material and spiritual realms. True living requires seeking truth and being satisfied with only what is necessary, driven by the understanding that absolute lack or excessive abundance can easily lead a person astray.

The primary approach among commentators is that the initial plea focuses on thought and speech, asking to be kept far from idle chatter and things of no substance, as well as from outright lies that do not endure [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי]. Others view these concepts simply as synonyms working together to firmly reject all forms of falsehood [מצודת דוד]. This is a request for God to plant a hatred of lies within a person's heart so they speak only the truth [מצודת דוד], are saved from bearing false witness [אבן עזרא], and are spared from unnecessary talk that neither helps nor harms [עמנואל הרומי]. Beyond everyday speech, a philosophical approach views this as a request for protection from mental and spiritual errors. In this light, a person prays not to fall for baseless superstitions, nor to be dragged down by heresy and philosophical lies, such as the belief that the world was never created but has simply always existed [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

The prayer then addresses physical reality, asking God to withhold the two economic extremes of severe poverty or vast wealth [אבן עזרא]. The goal is to avoid the unique sins and spiritual dangers that each extreme presents [אלשיך], while also escaping the indignity of needing to rely on the help of others [עמנואל הרומי]. Once again, the philosophical perspective applies this to the mind. It becomes a plea to avoid being poor in knowledge, where one fails to investigate and falls into ignorance, while also avoiding being overly rich in knowledge, where one breaks boundaries to explore mysteries beyond human grasp, ultimately leading to a loss of faith [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

The ultimate balance is found in a request for an exact, daily allowance of food. Using imagery borrowed from how animals are fed a specific portion, the prayer asks for a precise, allotted amount [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this is a request to receive only the essential food required to keep the body alive, without any unnecessary extras. On a spiritual level, this physical food serves as a metaphor for the exact mental nourishment suited to a person's individual capacity [רלב״ג]. This true nourishment is the wisdom of the Torah, which acts as the genuine bread meant to sustain the soul and guide it toward perfection [מלבי״ם].
