Psalms 10:2Sefaria

A tense and destructive encounter unfolds between those who hold power and those who are vulnerable, where the arrogance of one crushes the life of the other. Driven by cruelty, a sense of superiority, and intense pride, the wicked actively hunt down the poor. The primary approach among commentators understands this pursuit as a literal chase, where the powerful oppress the weak openly and without any sense of shame However, a different perspective focuses on the internal emotional toll of the victim rather than a physical chase. In this view, it is the heart of the poor that burns with deep pain and jealousy as they are forced to watch their oppressors succeed, boast, and push them down [אלשיך].

This relentless persecution inevitably involves a web of malicious thoughts and calculated schemes [מצודת ציון]. The ultimate result of these plots, and who exactly gets caught in them, presents three distinct possibilities. One approach views the outcome as a tragic reality, describing how the poor and vulnerable are successfully trapped in the evil plans designed against them by their oppressors

Conversely, other commentators read this outcome not as a statement of current fact, but as a passionate prayer for divine justice. It is a plea to God that the wicked should fall into their own traps. The hope is that the oppressors will be caught in the very snares they set, ultimately falling into every single scheme they carefully laid for others

A third, profound perspective suggests a mutual spiritual destruction. The trap is not physical, but mental, capturing both the oppressor and the victim in their own flawed ways of thinking. The wicked person becomes trapped in the false belief that God does not watch over the world, assuming his success comes solely from his own strength. At the same time, the poor person, consumed by despair, falls into the damaging belief that the righteous are doomed to suffer while the wicked enjoy good fortune. Ultimately, through these toxic thoughts, both individuals are snared and lose their spiritual path [אלשיך].
