בֵּ֣ית יִ֭שְׂרָאֵל בָּרְכ֣וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֑ה בֵּ֥ית אַ֝הֲרֹ֗ן בָּרְכ֥וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָֽה׃

A powerful call to bless God arises as a sharp contrast to the surrounding nations and their misplaced trust in idols [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this call to bless Him stems from a deep sense of gratitude. The Israelites recognize that God has separated them from the lost ways of idol worshippers, an idea similar to the daily prayers thanking Him for setting them apart from other nations [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. Beyond this spiritual separation, the blessing also serves as an expression of thanks for physical salvation from the hands of those very idol worshippers [רד״ק].

Praising God is not merely an expression of gratitude; it is an active, dynamic spiritual process. Through their actions and their blessings, the Israelites open heavenly channels, drawing down an abundant flow of divine blessing upon themselves [מלבי״ם].

The call is directed to two distinct groups in a specific order: first to the general nation of Israel, and then to the family of Aaron, the priests who serve directly before God and represent the most honored group within the nation [אבן עזרא, מאירי, רד״ק]. This division highlights that every individual and group blesses God—and in turn receives His abundant blessing—according to their unique spiritual level and capacity for understanding [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

This specific order also mirrors the natural sequence of events in the Temple. The Israelites first step forward to bring their sacrifices, and only afterward do the priests, who hold the privilege of drawing the nation closer to God, offer their own blessings [אלשיך]. Furthermore, the clear separation between the general public and the priests establishes an important legal principle. It reinforces the distinct status of the priesthood, teaching that the priests require an independent and separate process of atonement from the rest of the people [תורה תמימה].
