תהלים, פרק קל״ה, פסוק י״ח

Psalms 135:18Sefaria

כְּ֭מוֹהֶם יִהְי֣וּ עֹשֵׂיהֶ֑ם כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁר־בֹּטֵ֣חַ בָּהֶֽם׃

Idol worship carries a tragic irony. A person who bows to lifeless matter eventually becomes exactly like the object of their devotion. Instead of being uplifted or drawing strength from their worship, the individual loses their vitality and is emptied of their humanity.

The primary approach among commentators is that this devotion results in a state of total lifelessness. The craftsmen who carve the statues and the people who place their trust in them will ultimately become soulless. They will lose their senses of sight, hearing, smell, and speech, mirroring the very statues they created [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Commentators offer different perspectives on how this transformation takes place. Some view it as a curse and a prayer, expressing the hope that the artisans and their followers will become just as mute and unfeeling as their creations [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Others interpret it as a prophecy for the future, looking toward the Messianic era when all idol worshippers will finally fade from the world [רד״ק]. Taking a more practical view, another perspective sees this as a natural and logical outcome. Because an idol cannot possibly grant its worshipper more power than it possesses itself, the inevitable result is that those who make them become just as limited and helpless as the objects they revere [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper level, there is an explanation for the times when certain idols seem to display actual power or predict the future. This occurs because impure forces and external spirits are forced into the statues through witchcraft, creating a restless state devoid of true existence or peace. Therefore, the fate of these worshippers is that the exact same impure forces will take over their own bodies. These dark spirits will torment and destroy the worshippers from the inside out, just as they were trapped inside the statues [אלשיך].

In stark contrast to the grim destiny of those who merge with impurity and lifelessness stands the greatness of the Israelites. By recognizing the complete emptiness of idols, the holy nation is awakened to cling to God, the God of truth. They bless and praise their Creator from a place of true wholeness and vibrant life [מאירי, אלשיך].
