תהלים, פרק קל״ה, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 135:5Sefaria

A deep, personal recognition of God's greatness naturally overflows into a desire to share that awareness with others. Struck by the immense power of the Creator, the psalmist turns to the people to awaken their hearts and urge them to praise God [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. This personal declaration of knowledge does not rely on witnessing supernatural miracles. Instead, a true understanding of God's greatness comes from simply observing the creation of reality and the natural order [מלבי״ם], combined with a deep familiarity with the historical wonders passed down through generations [מאירי]. Through this reflection, God is revealed as the primary and ultimate cause of all existence [מלבי״ם].

Recognizing God as the ultimate master emphasizes His active control and providence over the world. He is greater than all else [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד], and every force of nature submits entirely to His will [מלבי״ם]. Acknowledging Him as Lord also highlights the unique, personal bond forged by the people who have willingly accepted His authority [רד״ק]. Furthermore, focusing on His lordship completes a broader pattern of praise, teaching that God should be celebrated through this specific aspect of His identity just as He is praised through His other names [אלשיך].

Declaring that God is greater than all other powers draws different insights regarding what those powers actually are. The primary approach among commentators is that these entities are the heavenly hosts and angels who guide the world. God is vastly greater than them because they possess no independent strength; they operate entirely through His power and command [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Alternatively, this comparison may refer to the lowly idols worshipped by other nations. Referring to them as divine does not suggest they hold any actual power, but merely reflects the misguided beliefs of those who worship them [אבן עזרא].
