תהלים, פרק ס״ו, פסוק י״ג

Psalms 66:13Sefaria

אָב֣וֹא בֵיתְךָ֣ בְעוֹל֑וֹת אֲשַׁלֵּ֖ם לְךָ֣ נְדָרָֽי׃

After experiencing profound salvation, a survivor naturally seeks a practical way to express deep gratitude to God. This response takes the form of bringing offerings and fulfilling the promises made during times of intense distress. The individual tone of this pledge suggests a personal commitment. It can be understood as the private words of the psalmist, a military commander [אבן עזרא], or King Hezekiah, who approaches the altar to thank God for his rescue and to make good on the vows he declared when he was in trouble [מלבי״ם].

However, the primary approach among commentators is that this singular voice actually represents the collective nation of Israel [רד״ק, מאירי]. Read through this national lens, the promise to enter God's house becomes a prophecy and a deep hope for the rebuilding of the Temple. It envisions the time when the Israelites will return at the end of their exile. The vows being fulfilled are the very promises the nation made out of desperation during their long, difficult years of banishment. They recognize that they can only fulfill these pledges once God finally redeems them [רש״י, רד״ק, מאירי].

This future return is not limited to a physical building; it points toward a spiritual Temple that will descend from heaven [אלשיך]. Furthermore, the specific burnt offerings brought at that time serve a unique purpose. They are intended to atone for any improper thoughts or doubts that might have entered the people's minds due to the severe hardships of their long exile [אלשיך].

Beyond the historical and national context, this expression of gratitude highlights a broader lesson about voluntary giving. While people are advised to minimize offerings brought for specific sins or guilt, burnt and peace offerings are entirely different. Because they are given freely from the heart out of pure thankfulness, they are always welcomed and encouraged in God's house [תורה תמימה].
