תהלים, פרק ע״ח, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 78:24Sefaria

וַיַּמְטֵ֬ר עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם מָ֣ן לֶאֱכֹ֑ל וּדְגַן־שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם נָ֣תַן לָֽמוֹ׃

The miracle of the manna falling in the desert stands as a profound display of Divine providence and the endless abundance God provided to the Israelites. Yet, this very miracle also casts a sharp light on the people's deep ingratitude. God had already provided for them by raining down this miraculous food. Because they already had a constant supply of sweet, clean nourishment that required no effort to prepare, their sudden demand for meat was a direct test of God. They had already witnessed that His power was limitless, making their complaints a striking display of ungratefulness [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

The manna is famously known as the grain of heaven. The primary approach among commentators is that this title highlights its unique origin. Unlike ordinary bread that sprouts from the earth, this nourishment was formed in the air and descended directly from above [אבן עזרא, מאירי]. It served as a complete substitute for earthly grain, though it was vastly superior and much sweeter to the taste [רד״ק].

Beyond its heavenly origin, there was a literal physical resemblance between the manna and actual grain. It fell as wheat-like kernels that could be easily kneaded into dough. According to certain traditions, it was so similar to earthly crops that it was even used for meal offerings and for the showbread within the Tabernacle [חומת אנך]. Taking a slightly different perspective, another view distinguishes between the different states of the manna. While the food possessed a deeply spiritual essence, calling it heavenly grain describes the specific stage when it materialized into a physical form. This transformation allowed it to be eaten and digested by humans, functioning just like the natural grain that grows from the ground [אלשיך].
