Passing down the tradition of the Torah is meant to break the cycle of past failures and guide future generations toward spiritual completion. A central warning in this process is to avoid repeating the mistakes of ancestors, whose lives were marked by inner instability and a slow drift away from the truth. The primary approach among commentators is that these ancestors were the generation that left Egypt and wandered the wilderness [רש"י, רד"ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. This group strayed from the proper path and actively refused to listen [מצודת ציון]. Their rebellion was not born of ignorance; they knew God well but chose to intentionally rebel against Him [מלבי"ם].

This spiritual collapse did not happen overnight. The evil inclination rarely causes an immediate fall, instead working step by step [אלשיך]. The first stage of their decline was a failure of preparation. They did not actively fix or direct their inner intentions [ביאור שטיינזלץ], nor did they ready themselves to seek God and follow His word [מצודת דוד, מלבי"ם]. At this early stage, their service to God was already flawed, but their core spirit still remained intact [אלשיך].

However, neglecting to prepare the heart inevitably led to a deeper, more severe spiritual crisis. Their inner spirit stopped being faithful to God, losing the strength, stability, and reliability it once had [ביאור שטיינזלץ], and ultimately fracturing their actual faith [רד"ק, מאירי, מצודת דוד]. The thoughts and desires of the people became completely disconnected from God [רד"ק]. Their inner spirit, which should have guided their hearts toward good, began to produce negative thoughts that led directly to sin. In the end, the people lost their ability to hold on to their beliefs [מלבי"ם], and their souls suffered a devastating blow to faith itself [אלשיך].
