תהלים, פרק ע״ח, פסוק ו׳

Psalms 78:6Sefaria

Passing down faith and testimony is not a single event, but a living, unending chain connecting parents to their children. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents a continuous process of passing tradition from generation to generation, lasting until the end of time. The focus on a final generation points to all the later generations that will follow. As children grow, reach maturity, and gain understanding, they step into their adult roles and take on the responsibility to share the heritage with their own children [רד״ק].

Sharing this history goes far beyond handing down dry facts, as it holds deep moral and educational purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The instruction is designed to guide future generations who did not personally witness the actions of God. Learning this history is meant to build a deep trust in God, teaching people to rely on Him rather than depending only on their own strength. It serves as a reminder of His kindness, which was given even when the people were not worthy. Ultimately, understanding this history inspires a person to follow the laws of the Torah out of pure devotion, rather than acting simply to receive a reward [אלשיך].
