תהלים, פרק ע״ח, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 78:5Sefaria

Passing down faith, history, and the commandments from one generation to the next forms the foundation of the nation's survival. God gifted His laws and testimonies to the people, linking them to an active, constant obligation to share this heritage with their children. This chain of transmission is designed to guarantee the nation's eternal existence.

The heritage passed down consists of distinct elements, often understood as testimonies and laws. The testimonies are viewed by some as the rational commandments supported by human logic, giving them a firm, established nature. The laws, however, are those commandments with hidden reasons that are accepted strictly through tradition [אבן עזרא]. Another approach views the testimonies as the straightforward narratives that bear witness to actual historical events, such as the creation of the world and the Exodus from Egypt. The laws represent the profound lessons and hidden secrets of creation derived from these very stories [מלבי"ם]. Alternatively, the testimonies can be understood as the core elements of faith that are deeply rooted in the human heart [מאירי].

This division of knowledge is reflected in the dual identities of the nation. The identity of Jacob represents the general public, the masses who easily grasp the simple, historical narratives. Meanwhile, the identity of Israel points to the great leaders and exceptional individuals who have the capacity to delve deeply into the hidden secrets of the tradition [מלבי"ם].

Receiving this wisdom is never meant to end with personal study. It carries a strict command for the ancestors to make these truths known to their children. Remembering historical events and recounting them to the next generation is an explicit requirement among the commandments [רד"ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Even though the written tradition stands as an eternal witness on its own, parents still bear the active responsibility to speak, explain, and pass the heritage forward [אלשיך].

The ultimate purpose of this unbroken chain of transmission is to ensure that faith and tradition endure forever [מצודת דוד]. By actively teaching the youth, parents guarantee that future generations will learn from the past, place their trust in God, remember His wonders, and faithfully observe His commandments [מאירי, מלבי"ם].
