תהלים, פרק ע״ח, פסוק כ״ב

Psalms 78:22Sefaria

כִּ֤י לֹ֣א הֶ֭אֱמִינוּ בֵּאלֹהִ֑ים וְלֹ֥א בָ֝טְח֗וּ בִּישׁוּעָתֽוֹ׃

The journey of the Israelites through the desert was marked by repeated failures, all stemming from a profound lack of faith. Their habit of constantly putting God to the test was directly driven by this fundamental flaw in their belief [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God's anger toward the people was not simply a reaction to their demand for meat. Rather, it was rooted in their failure to rely on the One who had already freed them from Egypt. They failed to trust that He would complete their salvation and provide them with the daily food they needed [אלשיך].

When examining the exact nature of this disbelief, different perspectives emerge. One approach suggests the people simply did not believe God was capable of fulfilling their specific requests [מצודת דוד]. Another view focuses on a broader doubt, suggesting they did not believe in His power to successfully bring them into the land of Israel [רד״ק].

Their ongoing failure to trust in God's ability to save them is seen by some as a natural reinforcement of their general lack of faith [אבן עזרא]. However, this lack of trust carries an added layer of severe criticism. Their doubt is particularly striking because God had already saved them multiple times in the past [רד״ק]. Instead of relying on Him with quiet confidence, they actively chose to put God to the test, demanding proof rather than trusting Him unconditionally [מצודת דוד].
