Psalms 78:64Sefaria

כֹּ֭הֲנָיו בַּחֶ֣רֶב נָפָ֑לוּ וְ֝אַלְמְנֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃

The destruction of the Tabernacle in Shiloh and the capture of the Ark of the Covenant by the Philistines marked a dramatic breaking point. This national tragedy was deeply intertwined with the severe personal losses suffered by the nation's leaders and their families. On the battlefield, the priests met a violent end. This refers primarily to Hophni and Phinehas, the sons of Eli the priest, who died in combat. However, the tragedy extended beyond them, as they were joined in death by the other priests who carried the Ark during the battle [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

In the aftermath of the slaughter, a haunting silence followed, as the widows of these fallen men did not weep for their husbands. One perspective explains this absence of mourning as the result of sudden, overwhelming death. For instance, upon hearing the bitter news, the wife of Phinehas immediately went into labor and died, leaving her no time to cry for her husband [רש״י, מלבי״ם, מאירי]. Other women simply died from a broken heart [רד״ק], or were themselves hunted down and killed [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This same sudden, tragic fate overtook the widows of many other soldiers who perished in the conflict [אבן עזרא].

Conversely, another approach suggests that the lack of weeping was not due to physical inability, but rather a profound shift in priorities. In this view, the spiritual and national devastation entirely overshadowed any personal sorrow. The women did not cry over the loss of their husbands because their tears were poured out entirely for the capture of the Ark of God. Faced with such an immense catastrophe, the personal pain of their widowhood faded into the background and was treated as nothing in comparison [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].
