Psalms 78:52Sefaria

The journey out of Egypt and through the barren wilderness unfolds through the peaceful imagery of a shepherd tending to his flock. This pastoral scene captures the deep care God provided for the Israelites, as well as the unique nature of their faith during their travels.

Following the plague of the firstborn, God brought the Israelites out of Egypt He did not rush them; rather, He guided them gently and calmly, exactly as a shepherd slowly leads his sheep This imagery of a flock also reflects the spiritual mindset of the people at that time. They marched forward with innocent hearts and complete faith [אלשיך], following God with the simple trust of animals trailing behind their shepherd, relying entirely on His guidance rather than their own understanding [מלבי״ם]. Every stop and start along their journey was far from random. Each movement was directed by careful, individual providence under the watchful eye of their Divine Shepherd [מאירי].

As they moved deeper into the wilderness, they required constant direction to ensure they would not lose their way, much like a herd of animals depends on its guide In this desolate environment, God took full responsibility for their physical needs. Just as a shepherd brings his herd to green pastures, God sustained the Israelites in the barren desert, supplying them with daily nourishment like the Manna and water from the well so that they lacked absolutely nothing They were not just any flock, but a distinct and special herd. Under His constant watch, they were blessed with abundance and protection at every step, from the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea all the way through their long journey in the wilderness [אלשיך].
