וַ֭יִּמְאַס בְּאֹ֣הֶל יוֹסֵ֑ף וּֽבְשֵׁ֥בֶט אֶ֝פְרַ֗יִם לֹ֣א בָחָֽר׃

A profound historical and spiritual shift occurs when the leadership of the nation and the chosen resting place for God's presence transition from the descendants of Rachel to the descendants of Leah. For a time, the Divine presence rested in the territory of Joseph at the Tabernacle of Shiloh [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. This sanctuary was a unique structure that blended the permanent with the temporary, built with lower walls of solid stone but covered above by the draped curtains of a tent [תורה תמימה].

Eventually, this sanctuary was destroyed and abandoned. God's presence does not depend on a physical location, but rather on the spiritual state of the people. Because the tribe of Ephraim was no longer spiritually worthy, God rejected their sanctuary. Even after the Ark of the Covenant was rescued from Philistine captivity, it never returned to its original home in Shiloh. Instead, the Ark wandered from place to place until King David finally brought it to Mount Zion in Jerusalem [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי]. However, this rejection also carried a measure of mercy. Rather than directing His anger at all the Israelites, God limited His judgment specifically to the sanctuary of Joseph, softening a harsh decree into a simple withdrawal of His choice from that tribe [אלשיך].

The loss experienced by the tribe of Ephraim is understood in different ways. The primary approach among commentators is to view the rejection of Ephraim as a poetic repetition, echoing the loss of the sanctuary in different words [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective, however, identifies a double loss of the historic leadership that Ephraim had held for many years [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. According to this view, the tribe was stripped of two distinct roles: the privilege of hosting God's sanctuary and the right to political kingship. From that moment forward, both spiritual and national leadership were transferred entirely to Mount Zion and the tribe of Judah [מלבי״ם].
