פרשת ואתחנן

Deuteronomy 6:15Sefaria

כִּ֣י אֵ֥ל קַנָּ֛א יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בְּקִרְבֶּ֑ךָ פֶּן־יֶ֠חֱרֶ֠ה אַף־יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּ֔ךְ וְהִשְׁמִ֣ידְךָ֔ מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ {ס}

The relationship between God and the Israelites is uniquely intimate, bringing immense spiritual heights along with severe existential risks. God loves His people with an intensity that demands absolute exclusivity, leaving no room for the worship of other deities [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This dynamic is much like a marriage where a husband provides for his wife's every need with careful attention, naturally leading to jealousy if she turns her affections elsewhere. While other nations are left to the natural order and the stars, the Israelites are guided by direct Divine care. Because of this unique closeness, God's jealousy is focused specifically on them [מלבי״ם].

It might seem strange that an all-powerful God would feel jealousy over meaningless idols. However, the human soul contains a spark of the Divine. When a person bows to a statue, they are not only lowering themselves but also degrading the divine element within them, which directly insults heavenly honor [אלשיך]. Furthermore, the temptation to worship idols does not always stem from a desire to abandon God. Sometimes, people feel that He is simply too distant or elevated, leading them to seek out physical mediators. To counter this, the Israelites are reminded that God dwells directly among them. His presence is right here on earth, close to humanity, entirely removing the need for any go-between [אלשיך].

This very closeness is what makes the threat of God's anger and complete destruction so severe. When His presence is felt powerfully within the camp, such as during times of war, the consequences for sinning are immediate and devastating. In contrast, during peaceful times, divine anger might be delayed [העמק דבר]. Therefore, the nation cannot afford to be complacent or rely on the fact that they survived past failures, such as the sin of the Golden Calf. Although they were spared then because of the righteous people among them, miraculous salvation does not happen every day. Any future betrayal could easily result in total ruin [אלשיך].
