וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־הָהָֽר׃

Moses' journey up Mount Sinai marks a profound transition from the human world into the divine realm. As he steps into an isolated encounter with God, nature itself responds to the event through the descent of a thick cloud. After leaving his final instructions with the elders, Moses began his climb. However, the initial ascent was gradual. He and Joshua only went up a short distance to a specific point on the mountain's slope [העמק דבר, קאסוטו].

As the journey progressed, a heavy cloud enveloped the mountain. Commentators debate the exact timing of this phenomenon. One perspective suggests a direct sequence of events, where the cloud descended the moment Moses began to climb [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another approach maintains that the cloud had already covered the mountain days earlier, perhaps as early as the sixth of Sivan or even from the day the Israelites first arrived. According to this view, the event is noted here simply to establish the background for the six days Moses spent waiting within the cloud [אבן עזרא, חזקוני, ביאור יש״ר, אבן עזרא הקצר].

This cloud served multiple distinct purposes. Primarily, it signaled God's approach [קאסוטו] and provided a visible sign to the Israelites, proving to them that God was speaking directly with Moses [רלב״ג]. It also acted as a physical barrier, hiding Moses from the view of the people waiting below [העמק דבר]. One opinion, though ultimately rejected by the sources, even suggests the cloud descended specifically in honor of Moses to prevent the elders from viewing the divine glory [אבן עזרא הקצר].

On a deeper spiritual level, the cloud functioned as a divine protective screen. By wrapping around the mountain and enclosing Moses within, it isolated and shielded him. This protective envelope allowed Moses to purify his physical body in preparation for receiving the Torah, ensuring he could safely withstand the consuming fire of God's glory that rested at the mountain's peak [אלשיך, שד״ל].
