Genesis 15:10Sefaria

The historical covenant forged between God and Abraham is sealed through a profound symbolic ritual that draws upon the customs of the ancient world. The primary approach among commentators is that this act reflects the standard method of making treaties in antiquity, where the involved parties would sever animals and walk between the pieces. This dramatic action served to show that just as the two halves of the animal were once a single body, the partners in the covenant are now united in an unbreakable bond that only death could sever. Alternatively, it stood as a severe warning that anyone who violated the agreement would share the fate of the divided animals

Abraham split the animals into two roughly equal halves He then carefully arranged the corresponding parts opposite one another, leaving a space between them. The language describing the pieces facing each other conceptually refers to each segment as the matching partner of its opposite half However, unlike the larger animals, the birds were left completely whole. The reference to the bird acts as a collective term for the specific types of fowl brought for the ritual

Several explanations are offered for why the birds were spared from being divided. Some suggest a practical reason, noting that because these creatures are so small, cutting them would render the pieces insignificant Another approach points out that since there were two birds, Abraham simply placed one whole bird on each side to maintain the symmetry of the arrangement without needing to sever them [חזקוני]. Beyond the immediate physical reality, leaving the birds whole serves as a preview of the future sacrificial laws that the Israelites would eventually observe. While animal sacrifices were to be cut into pieces, the laws regarding bird offerings explicitly command that they must not be completely separated

On a national and historical level, the contrast between the severed animals and the whole birds presents a prophetic vision regarding the destiny of nations. The large, coarse animals represent the various empires of the world. Their division signals that these nations are destined to be fractured in their beliefs, engage in conflict with one another, and ultimately fade from the world stage In stark contrast, the birds symbolize the Israelites, who are often compared to a small, gentle dove. The fact that the birds remain undivided points to a future where the Israelites will stay united in their faith and teachings, surviving eternally without being destroyed even when scattered across different exiles

On a deeply personal and psychological level, this ritual mirrors Abraham's own spiritual work. The severed animals represent the physical drives and material instincts of the human body, which Abraham successfully subdued, disciplined, and balanced to achieve a golden mean. The whole, untouched bird represents the divine soul within a person. It remains pure, intact, and exercises complete mastery over the physical forces of the body [מלבי״ם].
