II Chronicles 31:17Sefaria

The renewal of the Temple service during the reign of King Hezekiah required significant organizational and economic preparation. As the Priests and Levites returned to their public duties, it became essential to carefully investigate and update their genealogical records. This documentation ensured that the sacred offerings and tithes would be distributed fairly and in an orderly manner [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Appointed officials relied on these family histories to correctly allocate offerings to the Priests and tithes to the Levites [מצודת דוד].

The system of distribution was highly structured to care for everyone. Every man from the age of twenty was registered independently and received his own personal share. If he had male children aged three and older, they were linked to his record, and he received additional portions corresponding to the number of dependents in his household [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this food, sourced from the holy offerings and tithes, was meant to sustain the entire community of Temple servants, providing for the men, their wives, their sons, and their daughters [רש״י].

The decision to register and include men starting at age twenty is notable, as the original laws set the starting age for Levites working in the Tabernacle at twenty-five. This change was a direct result of the period of spiritual decline that preceded Hezekiah. During the reigns of previous wicked kings, the Temple service had been completely suspended, causing the Levites to forget the complex laws of their duties. To correct this, they were brought in earlier than usual so they could study, practice, and properly train for their service to God [רד״ק].

The allocation of these resources was closely tied to the official work schedule of the different divisions. Those who were actively serving their shift in the Temple enjoyed special privileges on their workdays, receiving specific portions of the sacrificial meat and animal skins [מלבי״ם]. However, the economic support system was comprehensive and did not only benefit those physically working in the Temple courtyard. Priests and Levites who were off duty, living in the open areas of their hometowns across the land, also received their proper share from the appointed officials [רש״י, מלבי״ם].
