The primary approach among commentators is that Hezekiah saw the enormous piles and wondered if the priests and Levites had even taken their required portions from the crop. He reasoned that they must not have touched the grain yet, because if they had already taken their share, it seemed impossible that such a vast amount would still remain.

Beyond the simple question of whether the portions had been collected, other perspectives reveal deeper layers to the king's inquiry. One view suggests that Hezekiah was trying to determine if such a staggering volume of gifts had ever been common in the past, before the nation began bringing their donations centrally to the House of God [רלב״ג]. Conversely, another perspective views the king's questions as an expression of deep concern for the spiritual and financial well-being of those serving in the Temple. According to this approach, Hezekiah feared that the piles remained untouched because the priests and Levites had abandoned their Torah study and Temple duties, leading them to stop claiming their portions. They explain that the overwhelming surplus is not the result of anyone failing to take their share, but rather a direct blessing from God upon the produce. The priests had indeed eaten and were fully satisfied, yet God had blessed the food so profoundly that a massive surplus remained [חומת אנך].
