Just before the ultimate destruction, God's deep mercy and patience come into full view. Rather than punishing the people immediately for their sins, He provides repeated warnings to help them avoid disaster. This prolonged period of warning serves to justify the final judgment, ensuring that no one can claim the punishment arrived without notice or without a fair chance to change their ways [רש״י]. To deliver these messages, God sent His word [מצודת דוד] through His prophets and chosen messengers [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון].

The mission of these prophets was marked by intense frequency and urgency. God repeatedly instructed the people to return to Him [ביאור שטיינזלץ], acting with great speed [מצודת דוד]. These calls for repentance were not occasional events happening once a year or even once a month; rather, they were delivered every single day [רש״י].

The driving force behind this relentless effort was God's compassion. He did not desire the death of those who sinned [רש״י], but hoped these constant warnings would inspire them to repent and be saved from ruin [מצודת דוד]. This pity extended beyond the people to His own dwelling place, the Temple [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The dynamic is much like a human king who naturally cares for his subjects and his royal palace, delaying their destruction for as long as possible. In the same way, God sought every opportunity to prevent the loss of both His nation and His holy home [רש״י, מצודת דוד].
