The final fall of Jerusalem brought not only physical destruction but also the total stripping of the city's wealth and sacred items. The invading Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, completely emptied both the Temple and the royal palaces of their contents. Every sacred vessel belonging to God, whether large or small, was seized. These items represented what was currently housed in the Temple, essentially the remaining pieces that had survived the earlier waves of exile under Jehoiakim and Jeconiah [רש״י].
Although it appeared that absolutely everything was taken, tradition reveals a slightly different reality. A portion of the sacred vessels never made the journey to Babylon, as they had been secretly hidden away earlier by King Josiah and other figures [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The looting, however, extended far beyond the holy objects. The immense treasures belonging to the Temple, alongside the personal wealth of the king and his highest officials, were all plundered and carried off to Babylon [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
