II Kings 9:21Sefaria

A fateful encounter unfolds as the kings of Israel and Judah ride out to meet an approaching, unidentified force. Their departure from the safety of the city is not just a tactical decision, but a journey that leads them directly to the site of a historic crime, bringing a long-standing royal injustice full circle.

Suspecting a situation that requires his direct involvement, Jehoram, the king of Israel, issues the order to harness the horses to his chariot As he and Ahaziah, the king of Judah, set out, each king drives his own vehicle. This detail reveals that Jehoram's recent injury was not particularly severe, as he was still fully capable of steering his chariot without assistance [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The manner of their departure reveals a complex, twofold motivation. On one hand, they want to intercept Jehu and assess the unfolding situation from a distance. At the same time, doubt and fear have already begun to take root in their minds. They prefer not to remain locked inside the city, where they could easily be trapped. By riding out into the open in their chariots, the kings secure a quick escape route should the approaching force turn out to be a full-scale rebellion [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, the kings intercept Jehu at the plot of land belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite [מצודת ציון]. This specific meeting place carries profound historical weight. It is the very field that Ahab seized by force after Jezebel orchestrated Naboth's murder. Confronting Jehu in this exact location serves as a stark reminder of the past, as the field represents the ultimate cruelty and wickedness of Ahab's royal house [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
