King Jehoram has temporarily left the active war zone in Ramoth-gilead, retreating to the city of Jezreel to recover from the severe wounds he suffered during the battle against the Arameans [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Capitalizing on this absence, Jehu makes his first major strategic move to secure the element of surprise. Addressing the military commanders who support his uprising, he challenges them to prove their loyalty. To achieve this, Jehu orders a complete lockdown of Ramoth-gilead, instructing his men to ensure that not a single person manages to slip away [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. The objective is critical: no one can be allowed to carry the news of the brewing rebellion to the king in Jezreel. By cutting off all communication, Jehu guarantees that he can march on the city and strike with total surprise, long before the injured king has any chance to prepare a defense [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
