The sudden arrival and departure of a prophet among army commanders immediately sparks suspicion. When Jehu attempts to brush off the visit, his fellow officers refuse to let the matter drop, accusing him of hiding the truth and of outright deception. The primary approach among commentators is that the commanders know a prophet does not travel simply for idle chatter or meaningless conversation [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, they recognize that a deeply guarded secret has just been delivered [רד״ק, רלב״ג].

They press him so intensely that Jehu is finally forced to reveal the monumental news regarding the throne [אברבנאל]. Yielding to their demands, he begins his explanation with a vague, general statement before laying out the details of the prophet's message [מצודת דוד].

However, this ambiguous introduction also serves as a deliberate cover for information Jehu wishes to keep quiet for the moment. It hints at the severe, additional commands he received, most notably the direct order to wipe out the entire royal house of Ahab. Rather than sharing the full, heavy burden of the prophecy, Jehu selectively reveals only the most crucial detail: that God has officially anointed him as the new king over Israel [מלבי״ם].
