The command to crown a new leader in the northern kingdom carries a heavy sense of urgency, danger, and deep political consequence. It sets the stage for a dramatic rebellion against the reigning monarch.
Generally, the kings of Israel did not require anointing with oil, as this sacred act was exclusively reserved for the royal line of the House of David. However, the anointing of Jehu was a rare exception. This unusual step was necessary to firmly establish his authority, publicly validate his right to the throne, and give him the courage needed to lead a rebellion against King Jehoram [אברבנאל].
The specific method of his anointing carried a hidden message about the future of his rule. Unlike the kings of Judah, who were anointed with holy oil poured from an animal horn, Jehu was anointed with persimmon oil poured from a simple flask. This distinction was deeply symbolic. Kings anointed from a flask, such as Saul and Jehu, were not granted an eternal dynasty. In contrast, those anointed from a horn, like David and Solomon, established enduring kingdoms [אברבנאל].
The prophet's messenger is instructed to declare Jehu as the new king over the Israelites. While the initial command seems brief, focusing only on the core declaration of kingship, the broader unfolding of the events reveals that the messenger was told to deliver a much longer message. This included the harsh prophecies of Elijah and Micaiah concerning the doomed future of the house of Ahab [רלב״ג, אברבנאל].
Following the pouring of the oil and the delivery of the message, the instructions demand extreme and immediate haste. The messenger is told to open the door and flee the moment he finishes speaking, without lingering or delaying for even a moment [רלב״ג, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This rapid escape served two critical purposes. First, it ensured that the messenger would not wait around to hear Jehu's reaction or response [רד״ק]. More importantly, it allowed the messenger to escape a very real threat to his life, as the current king would surely retaliate the moment he discovered the secret anointing and the brewing rebellion [מצודת דוד].
