II Samuel 5:12Sefaria

וַיֵּ֣דַע דָּוִ֔ד כִּֽי־הֱכִינ֧וֹ יְהֹוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְכִי֙ נִשֵּׂ֣א מַמְלַכְתּ֔וֹ בַּעֲב֖וּר עַמּ֥וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {ס}

A profound moment of clarity arrives when a leader realizes that his massive success is not a product of his own strength, but a tool meant to serve a higher purpose. For David, this realization crystallized as he understood that God had actively prepared, established, and elevated his kingdom.

The primary approach among commentators is that this awareness grew from observing a continuous chain of political and military triumphs. David saw his actions succeeding at every turn. He had captured Jerusalem, established his throne there, and felt his influence steadily expanding. The ultimate proof of God's backing came through the submission of foreign nations he did not even know. This was most evident when the King of Tyre took the initiative to send tribute and delegations of craftsmen to build a royal palace While these visible events provided clear evidence in the physical world, this profound recognition also stemmed from a deep internal source, guided by the holy spirit and prophecy [חומת אנך].

Through these experiences, David recognized that God was the one actively lifting the kingdom to new heights More importantly, he knew this elevation was never meant for his own personal glory, and he refused to take credit for the success Instead, he understood that his high position existed solely for the benefit of the Israelites. God had raised him up out of a deep love for the nation, positioning David to serve as their dedicated and caring shepherd

Driven by this clear sense of duty to his people, David took immediate steps to secure the future of the monarchy. Knowing that his reign was meant to serve Israel, he took additional wives in Jerusalem and fathered more sons. His goal was to raise a worthy heir who could continue to lead the holy nation and remain beloved by God [רלב״ג].
