II Samuel 6:12Sefaria

The journey of the Ark of the Covenant marks a profound shift from a source of terror to a wellspring of divine abundance. Following a previous tragedy, the Ark had been widely perceived as a dangerous and lethal force. However, the sudden prosperity of its temporary host completely transforms this perception. When David learns that God blessed the household of Obed-Edom, it becomes clear that this newfound wealth did not exist before; it appeared solely due to the Ark's presence [מצודת דוד].

This divine favor was not simply a direct reward for the host's personal actions, which would have only affected him individually. Instead, God bestowed His blessing upon the entire household for the sake of the Ark's honor. The greater purpose was to erase the damaging rumor that the Ark was a destructive object that brought death to its surroundings. By showering the household with abundance, God proved that His grace embraces anyone who draws near to the Ark [מלבי״ם]. This completely dispelled the lingering fear, revealing the Ark as a powerful source of blessing [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Encouraged by this realization, David sets out to bring the Ark up to Zion, the City of David [מצודת דוד]. This second attempt is defined by a profound sense of joy, marking a fundamental difference from the first disastrous effort. During the initial journey, the people behaved with lightheadedness and superficial laughter, which is merely a physical reaction. True joy, by contrast, is a deep, internal, and spiritual state of mind [אברבנאל]. David now acts out of love and the pure happiness of fulfilling a commandment, rather than being driven by fear and dread [מלבי״ם].

This internal correction and deep joy are also reflected in the physical transport of the Ark. Unlike the previous attempt where it was improperly placed on a cart, the Ark is now carried correctly by the Levites on their shoulders using poles. This careful attention to detail transforms the journey into a grand, honorable, and joyous ceremony
