II Samuel 6:7Sefaria

A moment of dread and a breach of the sacred suddenly halted the journey of the Ark of the Covenant, as a single human error led to a fatal outcome. Walking alongside the Ark, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady it, mistakenly believing it was about to fall. In response, God struck him with a fatal blow. The primary approach among commentators is that God's anger stemmed from Uzzah's lack of faith and his offense against the holiness of the Ark. Uzzah sinned by assuming that the sacred object depended on human support to keep from crashing to the ground He should have used simple logic: if the Ark miraculously carried the men who transported it across the Jordan River in the past, it surely had the power to support itself without his help Furthermore, physically touching the Ark was absolutely forbidden, an uncompromising rule that applied even to the Levites who were specifically dedicated to its service

Uzzah was struck down for an unintentional error and forgetfulness. He acted without thinking, momentarily forgetting the divine nature of the object before him The gravity of this lapse in judgment lies in his location. Forgetting the fear of God and the holiness of the Ark while standing right beside it is considered an unbearable offense, much like a person forgetting their awe of a king while standing directly in his presence [מלבי״ם].

Offering a different perspective on the severity of the punishment, some commentators explain that Uzzah was actually a completely righteous man, and this lapse in focus was his only sin. Normally, God is patient and does not punish a person for their first offense. However, because the act was done in public and damaged the honor of the Ark, God responded with strict justice rather than mercy. Consequently, Uzzah suffered immediate punishment for this single, unintentional mistake

The tragedy caused King David deep sadness. He feared that he was personally responsible for the disaster, realizing he had failed to command that the Ark be carried properly on the shoulders from the very beginning. Yet, there is an opinion that Uzzah alone brought the punishment upon himself by extending his hand, leaving David completely free of guilt [צוארי שלל].

Uzzah ultimately died right beside the Ark of God. On a basic level, this simply describes the physical location of his passing However, others find a deeper layer of comfort in this detail. Linking his death directly to the Ark suggests that his spiritual merits remained intact. Just as the Ark of the Covenant endures forever, Uzzah, who was fundamentally righteous, is guaranteed an eternal portion in the World to Come
