I Kings 17:17Sefaria

After a period of grace where a mother and son survived on a miraculous supply of oil and flour, a sudden tragedy strikes the family. The timing of this event, occurring right after they had been sustained by heavenly food [ביאור שטיינזלץ], creates a sharp contrast between their recent rescue from starvation and the severe illness that immediately follows [מלבי״ם]. This sequence of events reveals a deep spiritual bond formed between the giver and the receiver. Because the woman gave charity, her son was kept alive, and because Elijah received from her, the future miracle of resurrection would take place [אלשיך].

In this context, the woman is no longer referred to merely as a widow, but as the mistress of the house [מצודת ציון]. This shift in her title emphasizes that the miracle of their daily provision occurred entirely because of her merit, establishing her as the foundation of the home [מלבי״ם]. The illness that overtakes her child is not a natural, gradual sickness, but rather a sudden and overwhelmingly severe attack [מלבי״ם].

Regarding the exact condition of the boy, there are differing perspectives. Some suggest that the child does not actually die. Instead, his sickness is so intense that his breathing and pulse simply stop, leaving him with no visible signs of life and appearing as though he is on the very edge of death [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that the boy experiences a complete and absolute death as a result of the severe illness, noting that the cessation of breathing is the most definitive sign of death [אלשיך]. This conclusion is supported by the fact that his breathing stops only after a heavy illness, rather than from a sudden fainting spell without prior symptoms, proving that his death is absolute [אברבנאל].

Faced with this sudden tragedy immediately following their miraculous rescue, the woman believes she is being punished. She assumes that having a holy prophet in her home creates a stark comparison between his righteousness and her own flaws, thereby highlighting her sins and ultimately causing the death of her son [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Yet, the hidden purpose behind the tragedy is entirely different. The child falls ill and dies specifically to place Elijah in a position where he must call upon God and use the heavenly power to resurrect the dead [רש״י].
