וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔י הֲ֠גַ֠ם עַֽל־הָאַלְמָנָ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֨י מִתְגּוֹרֵ֥ר עִמָּ֛הּ הֲרֵע֖וֹתָ לְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־בְּנָֽהּ׃

The sudden death of the widow's son prompts a painful outcry from Elijah. Confronted with the tragedy that has befallen his host, the prophet experiences profound distress and a deep sense of injustice. He views himself simply as a stranger and a guest in her home, living in a temporary shelter, which makes the disaster feel even more unearned. In his prayer, Elijah questions why this tragedy has struck, framing his plea as a comparison to other events to understand the nature of the divine decree.

Commentators offer several perspectives on the exact nature of Elijah's complaint. One approach suggests that his outcry is driven by a deep sense of personal guilt. He wonders if God's anger toward him—which led to the severe drought and forced him to wander from place to place—has become so intense that it has spilled over onto the widow. She performed an act of kindness by taking him in, exactly as God desired, making it incredibly difficult for Elijah to accept that she is now suffering the loss of her child simply for opening her doors to him [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Another perspective shifts the focus to the broader national crisis. Just as God is punishing the Israelites for their sins by holding back the rain, Elijah fears He is now punishing the widow for her own private wrongdoings. The prophet is troubled that instead of her son being kept alive through the merit of hosting a man of God, she is facing strict divine judgment [רד״ק].

A third approach connects Elijah's outcry to the recent fate of Hiel the Bethelite, whose sons died as a result of their father's wickedness. According to this view, Elijah is raising a sharp moral question about divine justice. He asks God if the child of a kind and righteous widow is destined to die in the same manner as the children of a wicked man. If this is the case, it appears as though the righteous and the wicked are receiving the exact same treatment [אברבנאל].
