I Kings 17:21Sefaria

Elijah's dramatic effort to revive a young child involves much more than spoken words; it requires a complete physical and spiritual investment. The prophet combines intense physical exertion with a desperate cry to God, harnessing his entire body and focus to bring about a miracle.

To perform this act, Elijah stretches himself fully over the child, aligning his own body to match the boy exactly, placing his mouth, eyes, and hands directly over those of the lifeless child. The primary approach among commentators [מצודת דוד, רלב ג ואברבנאל] explains that this physical contact is meant to transfer the prophet's own life force and spirit directly into the child's limbs. Others [רד״ק] suggest that this posture allows Elijah to achieve absolute concentration, ensuring his prayer is entirely focused on the boy. Additionally, there is a practical, natural purpose to this closeness, which is to warm the cold body with the prophet's own body heat, as divine miracles frequently work in tandem with the laws of nature. Another perspective [מלבי״ם] views this physical contact as a necessary step to prepare a body that has already begun to fail, making it ready to receive life once more.

The prophet performs this intense action three times. He repeats the process of stretching over the boy and crying out in prayer until God answers him on the third attempt [רד״ק]. Furthermore, performing this act three times serves to prepare the three primary vessels within the child's body, which act as the home for the three distinct parts of the soul [מלבי״ם].

Having physically prepared the boy, Elijah turns to God in prayer. He recognizes that while a human being can prepare a physical vessel, God alone has the power to restore a soul [מלבי״ם]. He pleads for the child's life to return, asking specifically for the restoration of breath and the senses [רד״ק]. By asking for the soul to return deep inside the child, the prayer focuses specifically on the internal organs, particularly the heart. Because the heart is recognized as the root and source of all life, Elijah prays for the soul to enter there first. From the heart, the renewed life energy can then flow outward, spreading to every other part of the body [רלב״ג, רד ק ואברבנאל].
