I Kings 17:24Sefaria

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ עַתָּה֙ זֶ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אָ֑תָּה וּדְבַר־יְהֹוָ֥ה בְּפִ֖יךָ אֱמֶֽת׃ {פ}

The emotional declaration of a mother holding her newly resurrected child marks the climax of her encounter with the prophet Elijah. Yet, her sudden proclamation that she now finally knows he is a man of God raises a glaring question. She had already been living through a continuous, daily miracle where her small supply of flour and oil never ran out, and she had even referred to him as a man of God previously. Why did it take the resurrection of her son for her to truly believe?

The primary approach among commentators is that until the boy was brought back to life, the woman still harbored quiet doubts about Elijah's identity and the true source of his abilities. She might have assumed that he was not a prophet himself, but merely a messenger repeating a promise of food he had heard from someone else [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. Alternatively, she may have suspected that the endless supply of flour and oil was the result of magic or trickery rather than divine power [מלבי״ם]. It is also possible that the sheer shock and devastation of her son's sudden death simply overshadowed and erased the impact of the earlier miracle from her mind [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Only now, witnessing the impossible act of resurrection, was it proven beyond any doubt that his power was genuine and his connection to God was direct and personal.

Other perspectives suggest that the woman never actually doubted Elijah, but only now grasped the true magnitude of his greatness. Providing an ongoing supply of food could be understood as a natural blessing granted in the presence of a deeply righteous person, whereas reversing death is an unprecedented act that demonstrates a completely different realm of power [רד״ק]. She realized that his spiritual strength was so immense that he had reached a state of human perfection. Her declaration was a response to this new, ultimate revelation of his abilities, while simultaneously confirming the absolute truth of the earlier miracle involving the food [אברבנאל].

This shift in her understanding also reflects a deeper recognition of the different divine attributes Elijah channeled. Initially, when Elijah decreed a drought, the woman associated him strictly with God's attribute of harsh justice. However, saving her son from death is the ultimate expression of His mercy. She realized that Elijah was capable of wielding both forces, utilizing strict justice when necessary while also speaking with profound divine mercy [אלשיך]. Furthermore, it was not just the magnitude of the miracle that convinced her, but Elijah's personal character. The fact that he maintained complete humility and took no personal credit after performing such a monumental feat proved his inner perfection and absolute truthfulness [חומת אנך]. According to tradition, this resurrected child, who stood as living proof of Elijah's authenticity, grew up to be the prophet Jonah son of Amittai [חומת אנך].
